Greek musical history extends far back into ancient Greece, since music was a major part of ancient Greek theatre. Later influences from the Roman empire , Eastern Europe and the Byzantine area changed the form and style of Greek music.The Museum of Popular Music Instruments , is a museum  and Research Centre for Ethnomusicology in the Lassanis Mansion, PlakaAthensGreece. It displays about 600 Greek musical instruments from the last 300 years and has as many more in store.Greek musical instruments, were grouped under the general term of Lyre, all developments from the original construction of a tortoise shell with two branching horns, having also a cross piece to which the strings were attached.The strings varied in number from an original three to ten or even more in the later period, like the Byzantine area. 



The tour is starting at Metro Station Acropolis / Makrigianni and continue into the magnificent pedestrian settlement of Plaka, the oldest Athens neighborhood heading to our destination the unique museum of  Greek Folk musical instruments. The museum located just beside the Roman market place of Athens. The museum of Greek Folk musical instruments comprices the collection of about 1.200 Greek popular instruments, dating from the 18th century to the present day. The permanent exhibition is spread over three floors and divided into four sections. The display is arranged according to instrument types accompanied by explanatory in English. Ear phones beside the show-cases enable the visitor to listen to the musical examples of the sound. Enjoy  a sunset walking tour in the finest quarter of Athens and listen to the story of the Greek music!
