5 hours Modern Art, Events & Food tour in Gazi , Athens

''Gazi'' is a neighbourhood of Athens. It surrounds the old Athens gasworks, which is an industrial museum and exhibition space, widely known as Gazi, next to Keramikos ancient site and close to the Acropolis. It is home to the Technopolis of Athens, that spreads in an area of about 30,000m2, an industrial museum of modern architecture. Just two decades ago, Gazi was quiet. The city’s undesirables built a small neighbourhood in the shade of an old gas tower - that still stands today. That’s what ''Gazi'' means in Greek – gasworks. In 1984 the Athens gasworks closed down. It was the only gas factory in Europe untouched during WWII, because Germans feared that the bombardment of that area might harm the Acropolis and the surrounding ancient sites.

There is a special atmosphere in Gazi. You’ll see a tourist watching groups of people laughing, little children playing, bands performing, teens with skates and bikes, senior citizens discussing politics and couples flirting. Technopolis of Gazi is hailed as a one of a kind cultural centre in Europe, hosting various events, from art to fashion shows. Home to the industrial museum of modern architecture, the Technopolis of Athens, Gazi has grown rapidly as the home of multiple restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and art galleries. It is just a 20 minutes walk away from the Acropolis and Syntagma Square, the heart of Athens. Kerameikos metro station of Line 3 of the Athens Metro system runs adjacent to the Technopolis of Gazi. If you like to party above the ground level, visit the terrace at GazARTE, where arts and culture meet cocktails, special radio DJ playlists, and a panoramic view of the Acropolis and Gazi on a warm summer night. The GazARTE terrace, ornated with Greek native olive trees, pomegranate and tangerine trees, is a Garden of Eden within old industrial Athens.
